What better way to celebrate CCM®’s 5th birthday and the 50th anniversary of Hearst Castle® than with a high-fashion photo shoot? The September 2008 “Golden Age of Hearst” cover and feature article is a tribute to the glamour and allure of the Central Coast’s most treasured historical landmark.

Inspiration

We created an old-Hollywood-meets-modern-day-glamour look by mixing contemporary styles with classic flapper fashions from the ’20s and ’30s. Fun and flashy flapper accessories like turbans and peacock feathers (and famous actresses of the time like Greta Garbo and Louise Brooks) were our primary sources of inspiration.

Hairstylists Jericho Mora, Jessi Skipton, and Ashley Altorfer, and makeup artist Brynn Zinsman made the look come to life. “I added more shimmer so that the makeup wouldn’t look as vampy as it did in the ‘20s,” says Zinsman. “That’s what is really in right now—a smoky eye with metallic on top.” Mora topped off the iconic flapper face with an adaptation on the turban.

Jericho’s Styling Tips:
“This look was kept simple: iconic flapper era. The hair was curled with a hot marcel iron and then pinned flat to the head. Paul Mitchell Gloss Drops® were used to create curl control and a patent-leather shine. The hair was then wrapped in gold ribbon and a china silk scarf.”

Brynn’s Makeup Tricks:
“I created a classic smoky eye using Estée Lauder Automatic Eye Pencil Duo in Jet Black, but I updated the look by adding a layer of gold shadow on top. I also applied feathered false eyelashes for emphasis, and for fun.”
